5 New Year Dance Resolutions (That Are Easy To Keep!)
5th Jan 2022
A New Year and probably a new pair of ballet, tap or jazz shoes to break in. Let’s hope you manage to break them in before you break any resolutions that you promise to keep on the stroke of midnight!
What follows are 5 easy and fun resolutions to carry into your studio.
1/ Be More Thoughtful – Its easy to throw around ‘well done’, ‘you were great’, ‘nice move’ in the studio, however, tailor making your complements to a specific thing makes them more personalised and special to the recipient. Tell someone how hard they have been working and how you have noticed it. If someone is finally down in a box split let them know you have noticed.
2/ Stop Comparing Yourself To Others – We are all guilty of this in all aspects of life, but especially in the dance studio. Her splits are better than mine, she can do more spins etc STOP and just remember someone else is probably thinking the same thing about something you can do. Focus on your own dancing and not those around you.
3/ Pack Your Dance Bag The Night Before – Stop leaving it all to the last minute, 10 minutes before class and you’re still looking for your pointe shoes or favourite water bottle. Pack the night before or after your last class for the next will mean you are not rushing to class!
4/ Keep A Dance Diary – I’m not suggesting you keep a proper diary here but jot down what you did in class, the moves of a routine or new terminology. Even keep an electronic record of new routines so that if your teacher goes back to them in the future you can look at them and refresh your memory.
5/ Try New Things – It's easy to stay in your safe zone. You are a ballet dancer so couldn’t possibly do a commercial class. Let lose a bit and try something new, say yes more often and who knows where it may lead.
Happy New Year!
