Many dance schools don’t like you to wear a skirt until you reach a certain grade as a skirt obscure dancer’s line. However, other schools do like them as they give the more body conscious dancer an extra layer of cover, and some teachers use them to see the waistline more clearly and see if the hips are level. Always check with you teacher to see if wearing a skirt in class is allowed.
/ The pull-on Skirt – These are great for the younger dancer as they can just pull them on and off between classes, without any help and the elasticated waistband means they have growing room in them.
/ The Wrap-Over Skirt – The wrap over skirt which is usually tied at the side or back is a bit fiddlier for the younger dancer, but it allows the dancer tie it so that it shows of her figure more clearly.
/ Hook & Eye / Button / Velcro Skirt – Some skirts have a wrap-over effect without the long tie strings. Instead, they are tied at the waist with hook and eyes, buttons or Velcro. This means you have no long tie strings hanging down and a thicker elasticated waistband as you have with the pull-on skirts. However, the downside is they do not have much give in the waist and are not good for children still growing.
/ Georgette Material – Many skirts are made from this material as this silky crêpe fabric flows beautifully over the body, doesn’t crease very easily and is sheer.
/ Chiffon Material – Just like the Georgette material chiffon is very popular with ballet skirts as it is sheer in appearance and very light to wear
/ Nylon Lycra Material – In total opposite to georgette and chiffon materials nylon lycra skirts are opaque and a bit heavier to the wearer. However, they can be colour and material matched to your leotard and give the dancers outfit a continuous look.
/ Tutu Skirt – This is the skirt for fun! Lots of little dancers love the idea of being a big grown-up ballerina and want the layered tutu to match. Of cause older dancers can have a practice tutu skirts which let them get the feel of a dance in the full skirt without taking on and off their tutu’s all the time.
