Book Report - Tiny Pretty Things & Shiny Broken Pieces By Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton

Just finished the sequel to Tiny Pretty Things which is entitled Shiny Broken Pieces and I must admit I enjoyed them both immensely. Although these books are aimed at the older teen I found as an adult that they were an easy and entertaining read. The books addressed real-life issues such as eating disorders, coming out, envy, drug abuse, racism and bullying to name just a few. You find yourself embroiled in this teenage dance world and the writers make it extremely easy for you to understand and sympathise with the characters and their actions.

My only criticism is that perhaps it should have been written over three books instead of two so that there was more scope to develop the peripheral characters. Not wanting to give details away some of the side stories, for instance the inappropriate relationship between teacher and student was not give the time to evolve and be explored.

However, by the end of the second book no character is without fault be it deliberate or accidental and maybe in the end its the world of dance which should be held accountable for what happens to these young people!
